As you may know, two notebook computers were stolen from our business Main Street Station, right under my poor Mom's nose (who was working at the time). Dang.

Today, I solved the crime! Allow me to explain ...

Prior to the theft, I'd been using a remote Log-in called www.LogMeIn.com. This internet based service allows you to log into another computer over the internet. Last night, I was using this service and to my utter surprise I saw the stolen computer had just logged onto the internet! The criminal was actually using my stolen computer before my eyes.

One of the functions of LogMeIn shows the unique I.P. address the remote computer is using to surf the net. I noted the I.P. address of the stolen computer and did a reverse-look-up on the internet for it's source. Incredibly, the computer had just then logged into the WiFi of the hospital, steps from where I sat!

I jumped into action. Scanning the grounds immediately near the ER, I stumbled on a suspicious individual. He was just leaving the hospital with a computer bag in tow. It was someone I did not know (I'm told it's an individual newly back in Viroqua). I immediately returned to my computer and re-examined the remote access log. The stolen computer had just logged off the internet. It was him no doubt!

I alerted our friendly neighborhood police department. Sargent Dave Jefson and officer Emily were on the scene within seconds. The suspect gave them a lot of attitude and refused to allow a search of his bag. Diligently, they woke the magistrate to obtain a search warrant. At this point the dude broke down and began to weep. The officers brought me to him and we struck a deal. Yes, I'm a softy but I just could not press charges.

The deal: return both computers, which he did immediately, and go to the market and apologize to me mum!

The next morning, complying with our arrangement, the would-be thief went to Main Street Station, head down, and said sorry to my mother. She accepted with a smile. In the end, she had one parting request: pay this favor forward. He smiled back and promised to do so.

Crime solved . Favors paid forward. The end.
